Here we are on Google Street View!

We encountered all styles of rummage sale signs.    Our first project Monday mornings would be to remove them from trees, light poles, police call boxes and anywhere else they might be found on the boulevards.

Two beds seen here were also nesting places during the summer.   The peony bed, where Margie is picking up the ubiquitous garbage, was home to a family of doves.   They would be there for weeks as mom patiently sat on her eggs, then stayed with them until they were able to leave the nest.

The hydrangea bed beyond the roses was home one year to a family of ducks.   We treaded softly around there until we noticed one day that mom and the kids were gone.   All that was left were the shells of seven eggs.   Rabbits also found boulevard beds to be good spots for nesting.

This type of "accident" happened quite often.    Many beds and trees were run over.   Usually, this would happen overnight.   This one, however, happened in the middle of the morning.   We had turned the sprinklers on before morning break, then returned after break to turn them off.   When we arrived, this is what we saw.   The truck in the  playground across the street had run across the island when he realized he wouldn't be able to avoid hitting the car in front of him that had stopped for the red light.    Some of our begonias were on his front bumper.   He had also damaged the sprinklers.   In short order they were repaired and the bed replanted and all was well.

There's nothing like an ice cold slushy on a hot summer day.   Beware of brain freeze!

This bed somehow escaped demolition and lives on.
